About Me

My name is Andy Cahan. I was born in New York and have lived in North Carolina since 1979. From my earliest recollections I have had a strong interest in all aspects of Chinese culture. This interest has inspired me to make numerous trips to Asia. As a lifelong (amateur) Sinologist I have explored many avenues of Chinese history. One of my primary interests is Chinese label art. I have collected antique Chinese products for decades and have authored two books on the subject of Chinese label art (both for Schiffer Publishing). I search everywhere for items to add to my collection of labels, packages, etc. of tea, incense, lichees, firecrackers, and everything else.  I look forward to making a trip to Mississippi to learn about the history of Chinese people there, and hopefully to find some additions for my collection. I minored in Asian Studies at Oberlin College work as a cabinet builder and woodworker for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

About Me

I grew up in Turrell, AR.  My closest friend throughout elementary school was Robert (Bob Lum.  Bob's family operated a grocery store in Turrell, one of three Chinese grocers there, and later moved to Greenville, MS where they operated a store for many years.  After almost 50 years Bob and I were reunited recently and it was as though those years had not passed.  Our friendship was strong enough that we picked up where we stopped many years ago and enjoyed a wonderful evening of rememberances.  I saw Bob's brother Ed Soon at a reunion last year and that is what enabled the reunion with Bob.  The Lum/Soon brothers were all good friends along with the Wah brothers who, although younger than me have continued to be good friends.  Charlie Wah was the mayor of our town for many years.  Charlie recently passed away.   I have always been intrigued by the history of Chinese in the Delta and was happy to learn of this website to get more information.  The website was passed along to me by Bob Lum.
